Official-competition records

Career totals (goals, assists, appearances, minutes) follow official-competition records, cross-checked against multiple independent trackers and official tournament data after every update.

Why our assist counts look higher than some sites

Assists are counted using the broader historical definition applied consistently across both careers. Sites using stricter broadcast-data definitions (applied consistently only from the mid-2000s onward) show lower totals for both players. Neither count is wrong — they answer slightly different questions, so we state ours explicitly.

Small differences between trackers are normal

Goal and appearance totals can differ by one or two between reputable trackers, depending on how early-career matches and certain competitions are classified. We apply one classification consistently to both players, so every comparison on this site is like-for-like.

Reserve-team games excluded

Messi's Barcelona B (reserve team) appearances are excluded from career totals, in line with the industry standard of counting senior club football only.

Core Formula Definitions

Goals per match

`goals / matches` rounded to 2 decimals.

Minutes per goal

`total minutes played / goals`, lower value indicates better scoring frequency.

Club totals

Derived as `career totals - international totals` when a direct aggregate is not explicitly published in one feed.

Leader highlighting

For most metrics, higher is better. For efficiency metrics flagged as `lowerIsBetter`, the lower value is highlighted.
