Figures as of August 2026. Trophies = 44 vs 36.
Each dimension is a single figure split as a share of the pair's combined total; the verdict is the weighted average of those six shares using your slider settings. Trophies adds club trophies to major international titles — the World Cup, continental championships, Olympic Gold, the Finalissima and the Nations League — for 44 against 36. It is a framework for the argument, not a definitive answer. More on how the numbers are put together on the methodology page.
GOAT Calculator FAQ
How is the score worked out?
For each of the six dimensions, a player's number is expressed as a share of the pair's combined total — for goals that's 927 and 978, so 48.7% to Messi. Your slider weights are then applied as a weighted average of those six shares. Nothing is editorially adjusted.
Which stats does each slider use?
Goals and assists use career totals; Trophies uses club trophies plus major international titles; Ballon d'Or and Champions League use the title counts; International uses international goals. All figures are the same ones used across this site, refreshed as of August 2026.
Why isn't the World Cup weighted more heavily?
It is counted — as one of the major international titles in the Trophies dimension. The model deliberately doesn't decide that one title matters more than another; if you rate a World Cup above the raw count, that's what the Trophies and International sliders are for.
Does the result change when the stats update?
Yes. The dimension shares are rebuilt from the career figures every time they're refreshed (currently August 2026), so the verdict for a given set of weights moves with the players.
