Messi Retires From International Football: The Argentina Career in Numbers
On Monday, 31 August 2026, Lionel Messi announced his retirement from international football. He was 39, and had worn the Argentina shirt for 21 years — from a substitute debut in 2005 to captaining the defending champions to the final of the 2026 World Cup, the last of his six tournaments and the last match of his international career. "Time is running short, chapters come to a close, and this is one that hurts me deeply," he said in his statement. "I've given it my all, I have nothing left to give, and besides, there are some really great young players coming through behind me who deserve their chance."
The final tally
Messi finishes with 126 goals and 69 assists in 208 caps for Argentina. Both the goals total and the caps total are national records — he is Argentina's all-time leading scorer and its most-capped player, and no player has scored more goals in the country's history by a margin of more than 50.
The breakdown: 21 goals in 34 World Cup appearances, 14 in 39 Copa América matches, 36 in World Cup and Copa qualifiers, and 55 in friendlies. He also holds the record for international hat-tricks by an Argentina player, with 10.
The trophy years
For more than a decade the knock on Messi's international record was that it had no senior trophy on it. That changed at the Maracanã in 2021, and then kept changing:
- 2008 Olympic gold — Beijing, his first title in an Argentina shirt.
- 2021 Copa América — the first senior trophy, won in Brazil, in the Maracanã, against Brazil.
- 2022 Finalissima — Argentina 3-0 Italy at Wembley.
- 2022 World Cup — Qatar. Two goals in the final, the Golden Ball, the trophy at last.
- 2024 Copa América — a second continental title, retained in the United States.
He also leaves as a three-time World Cup finalist — runner-up in 2014, champion in 2022, runner-up again in 2026 — and the only player to have started three World Cup finals.
The records that stay behind him
At the World Cup specifically, Messi retires holding the all-time records for appearances (34) and assists (12), with 21 goals across the six editions, and remains the only player with two Golden Balls (2014 and 2022). Add the two Copa Américas and it is the most decorated international career of his generation.
What it means for the Messi vs Ronaldo debate
One side of the comparison is now closed. Messi's international book is finished at 126 goals and 208 caps; Cristiano Ronaldo, at 41, is still playing for Portugal and still adding to his own totals of 146 goals in 232 caps. On silverware the two now sit as a settled contrast: Messi's World Cup, two Copa Américas, Finalissima and Olympic gold against Ronaldo's European Championship and two Nations League titles. Ronaldo leads the head-to-head on international goals and caps; Messi leads it on major tournaments won.
